Jawai National Park, known for having the highest density of leopards in the world, is situated in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Between Jodhpur and Udaipur, this wildlife sanctuary holds a special place in the hearts of nature and wildlife lovers — a landscape of granite kopjes, scrub, cacti and dam-fed wetlands.
Apart from the elusive wild cats, the region shelters sloth bears, striped hyenas, mugger crocodiles, chinkara and hundreds of resident and migratory birds. The area is also known as Jawai Bandh for the reservoir at its heart.
A safari here is a chance to move slowly through this country with a trained naturalist — reading pug marks, watching the light change over the granite, and encountering wildlife on its own terms.
Jawai sits in the Pali district of southern Rajasthan, between the twin cities of Jodhpur and Udaipur. Its granite hills — spurs of the Aravalli range — hold cave systems that leopards use as daybeds, and the reservoir at the heart of the sanctuary sustains a large population of mugger crocodiles and migratory birds.
Safaris run at first and last light — the hours when leopards move. Two vehicles per session, six guests per vehicle. Sessions shift seasonally to follow the light.
The Jawai Bandh dam was completed in 1957, backing up the Jawai river to form Rajasthan's largest reservoir west of the Aravallis. The surrounding hills, long inhabited by the Rabari shepherd community, were declared a Leopard Conservation Reserve in 2017 in recognition of their remarkable predator population.
Beyond the Indian leopard, the reserve hosts sloth bear, striped hyena, chinkara, nilgai, jungle cat, jackal, mongoose and hundreds of bird species — flamingos, painted storks, sarus cranes and bar-headed geese among them. Vegetation is dry deciduous scrub with Prosopis, Acacia and hardy cacti clinging to the granite.
The main safari circuits move through the granite hills around Bera, Doodni and the Jawai Bandh shoreline. Each zone offers a distinct experience — cliffs and caves for leopards, wetlands for crocodiles and waders, open scrub for chinkara and nilgai.
October to March is the prime window — clear light, cool temperatures and high sighting probability. The park closes during monsoon (July–September) to protect breeding.
Winter dawns hover near 8°C and daytime highs sit around 24°C. Summer can pass 42°C by mid-morning; safaris shift earlier, and the resorts are quieter than the season photos suggest.

Each safari runs 2 hours 30 minutes. Sessions are held at first and last light — dawn (roughly 05:30–06:30 depending on season) and dusk (15:00–16:00). These are the hours leopards are active on the granite kopjes.
Jawai has the highest recorded density of leopards on earth. Between November and February our sighting success rate is around 96%. Off-peak sightings dip a little but remain reliable — ask us for the current month before you book.
